Surprise Visit from my Dad

After getting about 1 hour of sleep Mark and I got up and flew back from NC. We got home around 11am and caught up on some sleep so we could dominate the busy work week ahead of us. It was great to have a day to recover.

Monday night 11/26/12 at around 8pm our doorbell rings....IT'S MY DAD! We had no idea he was coming to visit. He drove all the way down from MT on terrible wintery roads and surprised us! It was nice to have him for a visit. My dad and I went on a tour of the Mayo Clinic, took rides in the country, went out to eat, went to a FABULOUS community Christmas program organized by our church, ate dinner and just chatted. We went to Paul and Janice's for dinner one night and Paul showed him a slide show. My dad brought a dog with him for the long drive and so a couple nights I took him on a run and a few times we took the pup out in the country and let him run on the roads! My dad also hauled back the car I had been borrowing from him (we got a new one a while ago and didn't need it any more)

My dad's rig hauling the Bravada back to Montana

Dad playing fetch with Tuck or at least he threw it once for him

Surprised both of our tongues weren't hanging out, it was early in the AM and cold :)
While my dad was here, we put up our 1st Christmas tree. We invited Paul over to help us too. Janice was out of town and didn't make it.

The "help" was really encouraging :)

Mark took it upon himself to take pictures, so I basically put up the tree while the men chatted

Early Thanksgiving

Paul and Janice were going to Arizona for Thanksgiving so we celebrated with the Days a little early. Jon and Emmalee came up from Iowa and Phil and Chantel came down from Minneapolis, and of course Mike and Lisa joined us for our dinner. Janice's oven broke right after the turkey was done! Good timing! Bad luck! It was a bummer they had to get a new oven, but I think we were all glad the turkey was cooked before it broke.  There was a lot of really good food and desserts. We ate until we were silly full in true Thanksgiving fashion.

I made mashed potatoes and Emmalee made some really delicious yams

The whole gang hard at work

 Thanksgiving in North Carolina

Mark and I flew into Charlotte, NC on Friday 11/16/12. We caught a shuttle to a hotel where my sister was going to pick us up. Ashley couldn't make it right when we got there for some reason so Mark and I asked the hotel to hold our bags and we went and "explored" downtown Charlotte. While we were exploring we stumbled into this little gem:

Strike City Bowling in downtown Charlotte, NC

Who doesn't want to bowl in this place?
Strike City bowling was not just your typical bowing alley, it seemed like an "up scale" bowling alley with waitresses that came around to your lanes and served you food/drinks. Mark and I just got drinks and our waitress gave them to us for free. She was really nice! We were about to bowl round two when my sister called and said she was getting close to picking us up! As fun as bowling was, the real fun began when we met up with the Walbruch's! They are so much fun! I always love to be with my sister and it helps that Mark and Nate were friends from High School. It makes for good times! My sister and I basically laughed the whole time!

Saturday 11/17/12 Mark and I got up bright and early and went and ran a 1/2 marathon. I did good until about mile 8 and then Mark basically had an emotionally/physically tired girl on his hands! Needless to say Mark was a total trooper for putting up with all of my crying/whining/complaining. I do enjoy the feeling of accomplishing something that is so hard for me, but while I'm doing it, it's not a pretty picture folks. The breeze was actually a little cool for NC. Mark ran the whole time with his sweatshirt on. I thought it just felt wonderful, but in true race fashion the beginning was FREEZING! Mark and I planned it just right and we got to the starting line about 2 min after the gun went off so after all the fast people got on their way, we joined in with the crowd that looked a little more our pace :) Ashley and Nate brought the girls up to Charlotte and met us at the finish line.

How do some people look so good after they have run 13 miles....

Once we got the race out of our way the Walbruch's vote was pizza hut....um my body was in SHOCK! 13 miles, seriously greasy pizza? This was bad folks!

Ashley and I went to lunch a couple times while Nate was at work and Mark stayed home and babysat. We had such a good time! Our whole week involved a lot of SODA (I mean A LOT), a lot of food (especially Mexican food). Did I mention my body was in SHOCK! Pedicures at Walmart with Teressa, LATE night movies, Tiger World, and bowling in no particular order.

Corey and Teressa Johnson came from Ohio to meet us for Thanksgiving. It was fun to have Mark, Nate, and Corey all together again (they are all HS buddies).

Mark and I slept in the garage where it was nice and cool...the girls knew where to find us every morning

Ellie eying the turkey

Mark dominating the dishes for 6 adults and 7 kids...there was a lot of dishes

Ashley, me, and Teressa

The aftermath, I think Teressa is the only one not asleep

We played dress up every morning

Bowling with the family, there was a lot of tears and smashed fingers but we had fun

Maquoketa State Park

I'm trying to catch up on our blog a little bit so bear with the old posts....I'll soon be caught up and you'll get what's going on in our current life :)

The end of September we went to Maquoketa State Park in Iowa and met Jon, Emmalee and Colton. Of course on our way out of town we had to stop by Janice and Paul's and grab some camping gear. We camped Friday night, got up and had yummy campfire breakfast and then explored some really cool caves. I slept awesome and even slept-in which was a little unusual for camping. One thing about camping in the Midwest is that you never really go to the "mountains." Our cute little campsite was literally in a bunch of trees surrounded by corn fields. It's a little different from having the mountains and big hikes to go on, but I still loved it.

Before we left we stopped at Paul and Janice's for some camping gear

After our camping and exploration we went back to Jon and Emmalee's and relaxed for the rest of the weekend. Fun times!

Boundary Waters with the Day Brothers

Mark and I had to "move in" with Paul and Janice for 2 weeks this summer. Helen and Duane Mathias' daughter came back for a visit and we let her be in her parents house uninterrupted. Mark and I have been "house sitting" for her parents while they are on a mission in California for 1 year. We have been so blessed to be in their home.

.............So we "moved" to Paul and Janice's and were grateful for their hospitality and glad we didn't have to pay for a motel for 2 weeks. THANKS :)

After being at Paul and Janice's for a week, Mark and ALL of his brothers went on a trip up to the boundary waters. For those people who don't have a clue what the "boundary waters" are I've copied what the "all knowing Wikipedia" says about it.

"The Boundary Waters is a region of wilderness straddling the Canada/US border between Ontario and Minnesota,  in the region just west of Lake Superior. The Boundary Waters region is characterized by a vast network of waterways and bogs within a glacially carved landscape.  The Boundary Waters is a popular destination for recreationalists pursuing camping, canoeing, fishing as well as for those simply looking for natural scenery and relaxation. The area is one of several distinct regions in Minnesota"

...........So off my hubby went with his brothers for a week with all there food packed and a couple canoes. Emmalee came up from Iowa and stayed for the week  while our husbands canoed. When I wasn't at work we had a good time hanging out, going on walks, going shopping etc.

Here are some pics from Mark's Boundary Water excursion.

One of the campsites....I don't suppose they could have found a harder surface to put the tent on?!?

It looks pretty

How they got around for a whole week at "sea"

Phil and Russ got some fish

They canoed from point A to point B. Or around about. That's A LOT of canoeing!

"Up North"....as the say in MN

I have been begging Mark to take me "up North" for quite some time. When my dad was going to come and visit us we thought it was the perfect opportunity to take the trip. One small problem.....my dad missed his flight, and wasn't able to reroute for a reasonable price. Mark and I decided to go anyway, so we left Friday after Mark got off work. We loaded up the car with our new bike rack and off we went. We got to Two Harbors, MN late Friday night and it was raining cats and dogs! After we checked into our cozy little cabin, we went and got some microwave popcorn and went back to our cabin where we watched a few movies (I watched one before falling asleep, Mark watched a few more) and ate popcorn. On Saturday we woke up early and biked from Gooseberry Falls to Beaver Bay where we stopped and had lunch and turned around. It was right along Lake Superior and the views were FABULOUS with the notorious "up North" fall colors! With a long sleeved undershirt and long pants we were warm most of the time! After we got back to Gooseberry Falls (about a 30mile bike ride) we went to a few sightseeing places in the car that we couldn't get to via bike. After a few Lake Superior highlights,we stopped for dinner/pie at World Famous Betty's Pies (thanks for the suggestion Walbruch's). Of course after we biked and ate I was tired so we went back to our little cabin on Lake Superior and built a fire and chatted. We had a wonderful Saturday! Being married and having a built in companion to do things with is AMAZING!  Sunday, we slept in and then got ready to head into Duluth and see what Duluth had to offer us. Duluth is a pretty town right on Lake Superior. I can certainly see why people think it gets deadly cold up there in the winter! That breeze coming in off Lake Superior carries a bite to it! We biked a few miles along the shore in Duluth and then headed back home so Mark could catch the Vikings game (true MN fan).

Here are some picture highlights from our trip:

Our View from our little cabin. We got to Two Harbors so late that we didn't even know what was outside our window until we woke up.
